The recent journey to The Gambia proved to be a remarkable success for the Ohio State Chapter. United by a shared vision and bolstered by strong community support, the team’s efforts yielded fruitful results.
A standout achievement was the collaborative installation of taps, a project undertaken alongside local women to expand access points within the water system. This initiative not only added practical value but also marked a pivotal moment in transitioning ownership of the water system to the community. As attention shifted towards the new structural endeavor in N’Jau, a few delays were encountered along the way. However, these challenges became an opportunity to embrace the spirit of EWB-USA, providing a platform to navigate unforeseen circumstances and adapt to change.
The team’s unwavering determination, coupled with the community’s enthusiastic involvement, emerged as key driving forces, propelling the mission forward even when faced with setbacks.
The augmented water access had a notable side effect—surplus produce. This surplus prompted collaborative discussions with the community about adapting it to their specific needs. Through interactive conversations and land measurements, potential market spaces were identified. Exploring preservation methods and understanding cold storage capabilities became focal points of these discussions. The commitment to community health was upheld through consistent water quality testing, both within the garden and in its immediate surroundings.
