Project Overview

EWB at Ohio State adopted the Carrera community in Spring 2021. Carrera is a rural highland community in Pichincha state, near Cayambe volcano, where children of different grade levels share a single classroom due to insufficient school space.

The chapter is designing and constructing an addition to the existing school building — either as a second story or a new standalone structure — to provide dedicated classroom space for each grade level.

Progress

An assessment team of six students and a mentor traveled to the site in July 2022 to conduct a structural evaluation, soil testing, and community surveys. In winter 2024, in-country partners completed structural reinforcements to the first floor.

Student members are currently designing the second story addition. The chapter traveled to Ecuador in summer 2025 and plans to continue traveling at least once a year to evaluate the project and support implementation.
