The Gambia Trip 2023

Our team returned to Njau to expand water access, install new tap stands, and hand off system ownership to the community — a major milestone in the chapter's longest running project.

Water tower infrastructure in Njau, The Gambia

The Ohio State University chapter of Engineers Without Borders successfully completed their 2023 trip to The Gambia. The team collaborated with the community of Njau on several meaningful infrastructure and agricultural projects.

Water System Expansion

The mission centered on expanding access to the community's existing water system. The team worked alongside local women to install new tap stands, broadening the number of access points within the infrastructure. This work represented a significant milestone in transitioning ownership of the water system to community members themselves — a core goal of EWB's sustainable development model.

Challenges Along the Way

A few delays were encountered during the trip. Rather than setbacks, these became opportunities to embrace the spirit of EWB-USA: navigating unforeseen circumstances with flexibility, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. The group demonstrated resilience when facing new structural work in Njau.

Agricultural and Community Impact

Improved water access generated a surplus of agricultural produce in the community garden. The team engaged community members in conversations about market opportunities and food preservation techniques, including cold storage capabilities. Consistent water quality testing was conducted throughout the garden and surrounding areas.

A Shared Experience

The trip reinforced the mutual nature of EWB's work. Enthusiasm for communication, cooperation, and shared learning created an atmosphere of collective growth — between the chapter and the community, and among team members themselves.
